ALL ABOUT
HOURS
Wondering what to do with your hours? Well, you are in the right place.
DEFINING A SERVICE HOUR
THERE'S A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN KEY CLUB HOURS AND COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS.
This may be an intimidating idea. Two types of hours? How? What? Where?
Fear not, for the difference between the two types of hours is not all that complicated.

KEY CLUB HOURS
These are hours that you spend participating in Key Club, but not necessarily doing a service project. For example, a club meeting that does not consist of an activity (an activity can be making cards, sandwiches, etc.) only counts as Key Club hours. Key Club hours do not count towards Bright Futures scholarships and therefore cannot be recorded in your community service packets.

COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS
These are hours that consist of an actual service event or project. For example, attending a beach cleanup or making cards for the elderly counts as community service hours. These hours count towards Bright Futures scholarships and should be recorded in your community service packets.

Both of these types of hours are combined to complete your total hour count that is counted towards Key Club. Your total hour count can influence your chance of becoming Key Clubber of the Month, your chance of winning awards at the end of the year, and your opportunity to go to DCON. In other words, both types of hours are rewarding.
RECORDING SERVICE HOURS
KEEP TRACK OF YOUR HOURS IN YOUR OWN PERSONAL NOTEBOOK OR FOLDER AND IN THE OFFICIAL COMMUNITY SERVICE PACKETS.
RECORDING HOURS ON YOUR OWN
The Board of Directors keeps track of both your Key Club hours and Community Service hours, but it is also your responsibility to know when you participated in an activity or event. We recommend recording your hours in a physical notebook or folder. Electronics are a good way to record information, but electronic data is not always reliable nor safe.
Recording your own hours ensures that you personally have an accurate record of them.
We recommend collecting this information in your notebook or folder:
-Date of event
-Time of event
-Location of event
-Purpose/sponsor of event
-Hours you earned

COMMUNITY SERVICE PACKETS
These packets consist of a Community Service Proposal Form and a community service hour documentation sheet. You can find these forms in the Guidance Office, on our "Documents & Links" page, or at this link: http://www.sdhc.k12.fl.us/doc/349/commservice-resource
Each packet should consist of one proposal sheet and one documentation sheet. When the documentation sheet is completely filled, move on to a new packet and/or turn that finished packet in to Guidance.
Before you turn in your packets to the office, make sure they have been signed off and verified by our advisor, Mrs. Reve (room 629).
Each packet must be turned in to Guidance by the end of the school year that the service hours were completed in.

These packets are what you record only your COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS in because Key Club hours do not count as actual community service hours. You should record all of your hours in a personal notebook or folder AND fill out these community service packets throughout the year. The office uses these packets to record your community service hours on your transcript. This is how hours are contributed to Bright Futures.
Remember, DO NOT record your Key Club hours in your community service packets.
REWARDS FOR A HIGH AMOUNT OF HOURS
OUR OFFICERS HAVE DISCOVERED THE REWARDS THAT COME WITH EARNING LOTS OF HOURS THEMSELVES.
HERE'S WHAT THEY HAD TO SAY.
"Last year, Key Club helped me earn about 400Â hours. By dedicating my time, effort, and energy into the club, I learned what great benefits come with earning lots of service hours.
Firstly, and most importantly, you know that you made a difference in your community. You know that by being an active member, you may have changed many peoples' lives for the better, and that is a great feeling.
Secondly, you can earn several different kinds of awards. There are club awards and DCON awards. With hard work and dedication to the club, they can be won by any member.
Thirdly, you can get a spot on the DCON list. DCON is a huge District event in Orlando at the end of every school year that includes officer training, bonding, and a whole lot of fun. It is definitely worth it to work towards going to DCON.
There are many other benefits to earning lots of service hours, but it is important to remember the true reason why we dedicate our time to service: supporting our community!"
PRESIDENT ANGELINA
"By earning lots of hours last year, I found out how large Key Club really is when I went to DCON. DCON made me realize that being in Key Club really makes a difference in people's lives. Whether it is providing food for the homeless or putting a smile on an elderly person's face, you are making a difference in your community!"
